The library community around the world made efforts to create an international network system for exchanging bibliographic information of documents, and this work influenced the emergence of MARC after standardization as AACR2, ISBD, LCSH, MARC, DDC, LCC, KCR, etc.

The machine-readable type started with LC in the 1950s, LC MARC I was developed in 1965, and MARC II, which was revised and supplemented, was enacted in 1968. By doing so, it overcomes the limitations of the card catalog and achieves the core of library automation with the central format of bibliographic information

This standard is an external form, and it determines the method of physically recording bibliographic information on a magnetic tape in order to exchange it.
